Pastor and Artist Jason Dorsey is launching an art club to provide a creative outlet for kids stuck at home during the school shut down over the Coronavirus. It is inspired by the Grunt and Groan Art Club Jason’s great grandmother, the famous artist and illustrator, Fanny Y. Cory ran with her grandchldren. Here’s a short article that my mom wrote about her Grandma Fanny’s art club: https://sunnyshorestudio.com/2017/09/30/the-grunt-and-groan-art-club/

Jason is the Pastor of Redeemer Redmond, a church that meets at Redmond Middle School. The church hasn’t been able to meet at the school for the last two weeks. King County schools will closed through at least April 27. “We keep our church van stored in our garage in Redmond,” Dorsey said. When Jason realized that they store the van elsewhere since we wouldn’t need it for quit a while, he started thinking about creative ways he could use the garage.
“I’d been wanting to start an Art Club for a long time. With kids being out of school I realized that this was a way that I could help parents and kids by providing creative content during their day.”
Jason, who volunteers at Redmond Middle School as part of the AVID tutoring program, is comfortable working with youth. He’s also an experienced art teacher. When he was twenty-three he taught his first art class to senior adults as an adjunct professor with Skagit Valley College. He taught a week long art class at Washington-Irving elementary school in Indianapolis. In the fall of 2014, he taught a watercolor class to youth who were part of the New Start mentoring program. At the end of the watercolor class, the kids all sold their artwork! Here’s some pictures from that art class.
Jason hopes to have an art show showcasing the youth’s art at the end of the eight weeks like he did with the New Star Program.
Jason’s Art Club will follow the guidelines of King County Emergency Order for smaller gatherings. This includes their recommendations for social distancing and limiting close contact. We will ask all participants to screen for symptoms each day. Proper hand washing, sanitation, and cleaning is readily available. And we will follow the environmental cleaning guidelines. To observe these recommendations, we can only have four students per class.
