Great News: Matching Grant Pledged and more

The JACK DORSEY “RAISE THE ROOF” SILENT ART AUCTION fund raiser is off to a great start with a $15,000 matching grant pledge. A person will match whatever is raised through the silent art auction of Jack Dorsey’s paintings up to $15,000.

The money raised will go towards replacing Jack and Ann’s cedar shake roof with either a metal or composite roof. We estimate the cost of this roof replacement to be approximately $30,000 [we’re waiting on the bid itself]. This matching grants makes hitting our $30,000 target seem more feasible, especially when Jack Dorsey’s original artwork will be starting at such amazing prices!

Great Reception: BBQ and Bluegrass concert featuring the Day Brothers

To celebrate Jack Dorsey’s art legacy and to raise money to “raise the roof” Sunnyshore Studio is hosting a “first come, first served” BBQ dinner and bluegrass concert on Saturday, June 22, 5:00-7:00pm. We’re planning to have enough BBQ for the first 100 people, after that pickings might be slim.

We’re thrilled to have Jack’s nephews, the Day Brothers, putting on a free Bluegrass concert for Jack’s family, friends, collectors and supporters. The concert will begin at 6:00pm.

The Day Brothers, David from Portland, OR, Daniel from Vinita, OK, and John from Longbranch, WA love singing songs that are rooted in Bluegrass, Country, Southern Gospel and Americana genres.  Having grown up in the Stanwood/Camano Island/Mount Vernon regions, all 3 of the brothers have written songs that were formed by events in life – so you will find songs from our region in their repertoire.  “Stillaguamish River Waltz”, “Lover’s Lane”, “Gonna Come Sweeping Through” are examples of their lyrical mastery meeting engaging melodies that help make a concert by The Day Brothers a wonderful experience. 

They are passionate about their music, and you will enjoy the repartee and musical intensity that the brothers bring to each concert. Acrylic University was created by Jed and Renae Dorsey – with strong assistance from Dan Ericson and Peter Stout – to make acrylic instruction and creative community accessible to everyone.

Access to Art Pilot Program

Sunnyshore Studio’s Artistic Director, Jason Dorsey, is working with Jed and Renae to develop Acrylic University’s “Access to Art” program. This program is geared towards giving youth, especially low income and disenfranchised youth, access to art instruction, art supplies and creative community.

The Need

Many young people have great artistic potential but do not have access to art instruction and supplies. Public education’s focus on the core subjects of math, English and science, and its value of athletics over art, often means that these young people’s artistic potential is not encouraged or cultivated. The cost of private art lessons and art supplies make the cultivation of young people’s artistic gifts available exclusively for the wealthy. Acrylic University aims to make art accessible for young people, especially youth from low income families. However, access to art instruction and supplies is not enough. These young people need the encouragement and critique, nurture and support of a community for their artistic gifts to flourish.

The Mission

The mission of AU’s Access to Art program is to provide artistically gifted youth access to art instruction, art supplies, and a supportive art community.   

The Vision

Over the next decade to raise up many gifted, successful artists who “share beauty” with the world by providing the Art for Access Program to hundreds of students.

The Program

Acrylic University believes access to art instruction, art supplies, and a supportive art community is the key to unlock the artistic potential of young people. Our program is aimed at providing this access to youth 12-22 years of age, and is especially geared towards youth from low-income families.

  1. Art Instruction: Acrylic University provides online instruction in acrylic painting from Master artist Jed Dorsey. Jed’s engaging, encouraging instruction style allows for youth to learn “over his shoulder and through his heart.” Much of what we learn is from watching someone else, learning from them. Acrylic University offers classes beginning with 101, the most basic class to more advanced courses. Because the instruction is on-line, the student can watch the lessons from his/her phone, or a computer at the library or at home.
  2.  Art Supplies: Acrylic University ships a backpack with all the necessary art supplies to begin painting. This includes easel, brushes, acrylic paint, palette, and canvases. It also includes a supply list for the student so that he/she can have a guide to purchase supplies in the future. It is important that all of the supplies fit in a backpack because many of these youth live transient lives, moving from apartment to apartment and they need to be able to carry their mini-art studio with them.
  3. Art Community. Enrollment in AU’s Access to Art community immediately connects the artistically gifted youth into a supportive, encouraging community. This starts with an “Advocate” who knows the youth’s potential and pledges to support them in their journey. The advocate is someone who knows the student and is in their lives. It might be a parent, grandparent or guardian, or a teacher.  After filling out an application and acceptance into the program, the youth is connected to a multi-generation community of artists facilitated by a “Coach” who provide support, encouragement, and critique.

We are Family, June 4th Update

Wrapping up 5+ Hour Docu-series

David Lichty is working hard on finishing up the 5+ hour docu-series. This is the “uncut” version of the movie that we promised our Kickstarter supporters. We’ve finished all of the interviews. David is placing the last of the B-roll footage. After that is done he’ll work on screen titles and color correction.

Tremayne Reed

Hiring Tremayne Reed to make Feature Documentary

We hired Tremayne Reed to make the Feature Documentary. Tremayne is a gifted young filmmaker. Tremayne will take the 5+ hours docu-series and create a faster-paced Feature documentary. Getting Feedback on Film

We are also arranging for consulting feedback on both the docu-series and feature documentary. Jeff Sparks, who has lots of experience in the film industry has graciously agreed to provide feedback on both. We are also working with Donteau Gladney Sr, Clarence Walker Sr., and others to provide us feedback.

Working with IHSAA

We continue to working with Chris Kaufman, a representative of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA footage) to use IHSAA footage in the documentary. We are close to finalizing the Errors and Omissions Insurance required by IHSAA. We’re super thankful for the support on this project by Chris and IHSAA.

Signing off by Klutch Sports

After the Feature Documentary is completed we will send it to Klutch Sports, a sports agency which represents Trey Lyles. Trey plays for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets. Since Klutch represents Trey, including his media image and identity, they have asked to sign off on the parts of the documentary that include Trey. We’re thankful that Klutch Sports and the Lyle’s family has been so supportive of this project!

Finishing the We are Family Soundtrack

We have received most of the music for the documentary. All that is left is three songs by Caleb Buse, and music, mixing and mastering from Steve Wicks. We want to wait until we have the video for the Feature documentary completed so that Caleb’s compositions and Steve’s music and mixing and mastering can be synched with it.

Exclusive Screening in Indy

When the Feature Documentary with accompanying sound track is finished we will hold an exclusive screening in Indianapolis. This screening will give us a chance to share the documentary on the big screen with players, family, Tech alumni, Kickstarter supporters and others who have helped to make the film happen. We look forward to getting specific feedback on the film at this point.

Delivery of Digital Versions of the Sound Track, Feature Documentary and Docu-series to Kickstarter Supporters

At this point we will be prepared to send digital versions of the sound track, docu-series (what we called the “uncut” documentary), and the feature documentary to the people who supported the production of the movie through our Kickstarter campaign.

Wrapping the Project Up

I (Jason Dorsey) take responsibility for not delivering this movie by the date we had originally set (screening in March, 2019 and delivery to Kickstarter supporters by May, 2019). I obviously miscalculated the amount of work and the logistical details that would have to fall into place to produce this movie.

I could not have foreseen that the father of my main video editor, David Lichty, would have a major hospitalization and David would rightly need to spend a lot of time at his side. Amazingly, David has worked hard throughout his father’s hospitalization, but it has definitely slowed things down.

My production team is working hard to wrap the project up and to do our very best to tell this inspiring story. Thanks so much for your patience as we wrap the project up.
