Sunnyshore Studio will showcase the art of Nigerian artist Babatunde Kesa in December. Sunnyshore Studio’s Artistic Director, Jason Dorsey, interviewed Kesa about the upcoming show:

Sunnyshore Studio: Kesa, we are super excited to be showcasing your beautiful art. I know your sister Funmi who is a wonderful member of the church I pastor in Redmond. But I don’t know much about you. Tell me about yourself.
Babatunde Kesa: I’m Babatunde Kesa, born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, to a loving Yoruba Family. Growing up, at first I was not able to receive the full support/encouragement from my late Dad to practice art but he later left me with my decision, but my Mum has been a support system from day one. This laid the foundation for my artistic journey. Which I later attended school of Art and Industrial design, Auchi Polytechnic, Edo state, where I honed my skills in fine art.

Sunnyshore Studio: When did you first discover an interest and talent in art?
Babatunde Kesa: I’ve always been fascinated by colors, patterns, and textures, often experimenting with crayons, and paints as a child at 6. But because of lack of encouragement from the beginning, I began formal art training at 17 with Jonix Art Studio in Lagos. My natural talent and passion for art led me to pursue it as a career.

Sunnyshore Studio: Tell us more about your journey in art.
Babatunde Kesa: I studied General art at the Federal Polytechnic Auchi in Edo state, where I was fortunate to learn from talented instructors who refined my skills and broadened my artistic perspective. Notable influences include Nigerian artists who thought me directly and indirectly like Jonathan Ikpoza, Kent Onah, Duke Asidere and Edosa Oguigo, as well as international artists colours pallet like Dan McCaw and Harley Brown.

Sunnyshore Studio: What does art mean for you?
Babatunde Kesa: Art is a powerful medium for self-expression, storytelling, and connecting with others. I hope my art communicates emotions, sparks conversations, and inspires viewers to explore their creativity.

Sunnyshore Studio: Share some high points in your art career
Babatunde Kesa: I’ve exhibited in Nigeria and internationally, including shows at the Gallery at the Landmark, Lagos where I did my first solo show, and participated in Black History Month with Artsy, London. Struggles include balancing artistic vision with commercial viability and navigating the challenges of the Nigerian art scene.

Sunnyshore Studio: What’s exciting about the upcoming art show Connections?
Babatunde Kesa: I’m thrilled to collaborate with my sister Funmi and Sunnyshore Studio on this show, exploring themes of identity, culture, and relationships through mixed media paintings. The show promises to be a unique celebration of art and friendship.
Opening Reception is Friday, December 12, 6-9pm. Show continues on Saturday, December 13, 10am-6pm at 9943 160th Ave NE, Redmond, WA.

I am so sorry that we will miss this! Ngozi and I will be in Ohio that weekend…

Great work by a great artist!
Your artwork has explicitly stated that in every sphere of our lives, we need true love, true friendship and an everlasting bond to connect both spiritually with Christ and humans in the physical world.
